Book Blast : The Weekend Warriors by James W. Burke Jr

Inside the Book:

Title: The Weekend Warriors
Author: James W. Burke Jr
Publisher: iUniverse
Genre: Suspense
Format: Ebook

Married with two children, Michael Patrick Fitzmaurice, Major, Infantry, US Army Reserve, is going to war. Bound for Ramstein, Germany, he and his troops, who never expected to be on the frontline, must now stand in battle alongside their active-duty counterparts. It's the mid-1980s and the United States is under the leadership of a new president who continues its post-Vietnam withdrawal from the world stage. Domestic affairs are the administration's priority, while international affairs are given short shrift. In Western Europe, this disengagement of the United States causes turmoil and indecision. The Soviet General Staff observes these conditions and sees an opportunity in the West's disarray. They believe one strong, overwhelming offense, launched violently and without warning, would overcome NATO's defenses before the alliance could react. Once the Soviet forces seized their objectives in West Germany and the Netherlands, NATO would be forced to sue for peace on Soviet terms. Even if the United States could react to the offensive, its support would never reach the battlefield in time to affect the outcome. And, once the Soviet forces held their ground, the demoralized people of Western Europe would never rally for a counter attack. To meet this threat and support its allies, the United States mobilizes large numbers of reservists and National Guard troops—women and men like Mike who fight to defeat the Soviet onslaught and repel the invaders.

James W. Burke Jr. is a graduate of the US Military Academy and the Army Command and General Staff College. He served more than twenty-five years in the Army, National Guard, and Army Reserve. Burke lives Kennebunkport, Maine, with his wife, Kate.

Tessie rescues the baby osprey and finds the osprey parents, who have been killed by the young boys who raided the osprey’s nest to steal the recently hatched babies. Having had some experience caring for birds in her youth, Tessie takes the baby osprey home, and calls the police to report what happened. After caring and feeding the bird, and building a cage for the osprey, Tessie finds herself exhausted and needing to rest. Lying down on the porch sofa, sleep soon overtakes her, and she is transported back in time, when she was a ten-year old girl growing up on her parents’ dairy farm in northern New York, on the St. Lawrence River.

Devastated to learn that she is adopted, Tessie is taunted by her classmates as she struggles to understand why she was unwanted by her biological parents. In her isolation from children her own age. Tessie creates her own fantasy world with the help of Dolly, a horse that is boarded at her parent’s farm and whom Tessie adopts as her pet, and two geese, raised and nurtured by Tessie from hatchlings. While roaming her fantasy world with Dolly, she meets and befriends an older woman, Maudie Carroll, the local high school librarian, who plays an important role in helping Tessie as find herself she learns to accept who she is, and to find acceptance by those around her. This is a story of courage and determination, self-discovery and love, and a young girl’s struggle to overcome the pain of being an adopted child.

Who or what is the inspiration behind this book?

Anne was a teacher who taught children at all levels of learning- elementary, midlle and high schoolers. She loved her students, particularly her elementary kids. I believe she had these stories germinating  for some time, and only needed the the right opportunity to begin. That opportunity, I believe, came when she retired and had the time to sit down and write.. I also believe that Fly Away Free was close to being autobiographical. Anne identified with Tessie Farrell, Fly Away Free young heroine, and although she wasn’t adopted, Anne was raised in a foster home, on a farm in northern New York at the age of twelve, after her father died two years earlier, and following her mother’s hospitalization for severe depression. Certainly, Tessie exhibited many of the same emotions that Anne must have felt throughout that difficult period in her life.

What cause are you most passionate about and why?

Continuing Anne’s legacy and sharing the importance of safe homes for children in Foster Care and adoption.

Who has influenced you throughout your writing career?

Can’t say, possibly me. I was also writing a book at the time for Doubleday.

What are some of your long term goals?

Learning how to use social media more effectively to be able to share these stories.

Book Feature: The Adventures of Archibald and Jockabeb Series by Art Collins

When my two daughters were eight and nine years old, I began telling them stories about two young brothers who had a series of fantastic adventures. Several decades later when I retired from running a Fortune 500 company, I didn’t write the book on leadership that many people had expected—rather, I followed my daughters’ advice and expanded upon the stories I recited decades earlier and wrote the first book in the The Adventures of Archibald and Jockabeb series. My brother, who is a fourth grade school teacher in South Carolina and the person on which the Jockabeb character is based, provided me invaluable feedback from his students as I wrote the books. Better yet, the students, teachers, and parents in his school made all the hours spent at my keyboard worthwhile when they thanked me for authoring the first book and then urged me to keep on writing. Well, needless to say, I took their advice. Eight years later, the nine-book series sits in the Charles Pinckney Elementary School library as well as many schools and media centers throughout the Charleston County School District and is part of the reading curriculum. One of my highlights each year is to revisit Pinckney each year  and meet with a new group of excited students who have just begun to join Archibald and Jockabeb as they set out on their next great adventure!

Meet the Author:

When Art Collins retired as a highly successful chairman and CEO of a Fortune 500 company, he didn’t write the book on leadership that many had expected. Instead, he decided that penning adventure stories that could be enjoyed by young and old would be far more interesting, not to mention much more fun. Borrowing two characters, Archibald and Jockabeb, from tales told by his father many years before, and drawing upon his own rich imagination, Art introduces the two young brothers to an incredible cast of characters—some human, some otherworldly—in locations that range from the mysterious forest behind the boys’ house to the lush and exotic Amazon. The nine book series reflects his love of the mountains and ocean, as well as his extensive travels that have taken him to every continent except Antarctica. Art currently divides his time between Chicago and the Vail Valley in Colorado.

Meet the Author

Born British and raised in South Africa, Sarah Hegger suffers from an incurable case of wanderlust. Her match? A hot Canadian engineer, whose marriage proposal she accepted six short weeks after they first met. Together they’ve made homes in seven different cities across three different continents (and back again once or twice).
